Abstract

Disclosed is a method and apparatus of combining the image recognition with vehicale collaboration technology to provide Global Positionaing Systemt (GPS) with a two-mode mechanism identifying whether the vehicle is under or over the viaduct. With the check points embedded in geographic data, the times of image recognition can be substantially reduced to optimize the workload of the GPS device. It can also collaborate with the front vehicles when the front sight was blocked.This advanced GPS can precisely detect the location of vehicle for further rout planning even it's on the mult-tier viaduct or complex overlapping road-viaduct structure.

Background:

1) The GPS (Global Positioning System):


- Earth-orbiting-satellite based navigation system

     - Rely on the signal transmitted by satellites to estimate the position of the GPS receiver and calculate the best direction 2) Imprecise position identification:

    - When two or more routes overlap, GPS can't precisely determine if the vehicle is driving on the road under or over the viaduct

    - Incorrect position information results in ludicrous route planning, i.e. the turn-left direction on the middle of the viaduct


- The problem becomes more complicated in the multi-deck viaduct

  Provides a mechanism to identify whether the vehicle is under or over the viaduct. This invention has two modes:

  1. Self mode: Leverage the image pattern recognition technique with the check points embedded in geo-data to compare the front view of the vehicle with the sample street view in geographic database.

  2. Collaboration mode: If some obstacles obstruct the process of image capturing, this invention can communicate with front vehicles to support the location identification.

The advantage of this invention in identifying the altitude of the vehicle is : - More precise than barometric or multiple GPS antennas - Low workload for GPS machine (Check point + Image processing)

  - Ensure the success of image capturing for location identification (Vehicle collaboration)

Description of invention:

-Select Check Points: The check point can be selected on/under the viaduct or the ramp before entering/exiting the viaduct. One viaduct can have multiple check points to raise the accuracy. The check point should has the conspicuous object or

landmark to be identified easily. The traffic signs, piers, frames and buildings will be the important features for pattern recognition.

- Store Check Point Data in Geographic Database: The sample street view is to simulate the front scene of the vehicle. If the highway (over the viaduct) and the local road (under the viaduct) at the same geographical coordinates data have the different sample street view, geographic database system will store the coordinates data as a check...
