Manufacturing of Hard Disk Drives (HDD) takes a few weeks, and as more and more test tracks need to be tested on newer products, the test time is increasing to months. The proposal in this note is to run these tests during shipping instead of in the factory.

HDDs are manufactured in one location (typically China, Singapore, Thailand...) and then shipped to customers worldwide. The shipping is usually by boat, train or truck to reduce costs, which means the drives are currently boxed up for a long time (for example 2 weeks to 2months). If we include time at customs, there is a lot of time before delivery to customers that could be better used.

At the same time, manufacturing tests are run using self test embedded firmware code: after assembly of all parts, the drive is plugged into a tester providing power, firmware code is downloaded onto the drive, and then the code will simply run for ~2-6 weeks to complete a variety of functional calibrations and reliability verification tests.

Instead of occupying manufacturing floor space, limiting work in progress, this self-test could be run during shipping.

Some concerns may arise with this proposal:

1) testers need power during shipping. This can be provided by a variety of sources (fuel, batteries, solar, wind ...).

2) environmental control, in particular temperature are an important parameter during factory manufacturing. Newer testers have w...
