Abstract

The ingestion of water or even humidity may be an issue for an aircraft equipment and in particular Air Data Probes as for instance Angle of Attack probes. Detection of such a situation without performing an inspection requiring the equipment opening is a challenge. Measurement of the electrical resistance of the electrical parts of the equipment and comparison with a nominal threshold constitutes a principle of water ingestion detection.

Detection of water in an aircraft probe

Principle

The ingestion of water or even humidity may be an issue for aircraft equipment and in particular Air Data Probes as for instance Angle of Attack probes. Detection of such a situation without performing an inspection requiring the equipment opening is a challenge.

For equipment containing electrical parts, the ingestion of water may degrade their electrical insulation properties.

As result, measurement of the electrical resistance of the electrical parts of the equipment and comparison with a nominal threshold constitutes a principle of water ingestion detection.

Such a measurement can be performed between the output signal pins of the equipment and the pin allocated to its electrical ground.

Another possibility is to include in the equipment a specific device designed to be sensitive to water and to perform the measurement at the output of this device. For example, this device can be a humidity sensor. It can be connected either between specific pins of the equipment or between...
