Abstract

The purpose of this invention is to detail a method by which open cell shape memory polymer (SMP) oilfield equipment could be mass-compacted, and thus mass-produced, by using a particulate-laden fluid to build pressure on the exterior of the SMP tool or cartridge which would then cause the SMP cartridge to be compressed and compact into a smaller shape. Following this compaction/compression process, the SMP cartridge would be able to be shipped as-is and then run downhole, at which point it could be expanded back to its original shape using existing activation fluid technology. The proposed invention/method would allow for the compaction process to be performed on multiple cartridges simultaneously, allowing for entire tool joints of open-cell SMP oilfield equipment to be produced as finished units, which could potentially significantly reduce the time required to produce said units. The method is as follows: (1) Assemble full SMP tool joint & insert into pressure vessel; (2) flood pressure vessel with particulate-laden fluid that will cause a filter cake to form on the exterior of the SMP foam; (3) apply pressure to exterior of SMP until it has been compacted to minimum outside diameter (OD); (4) flush out particulate-laden fluid from pressure vessel with water & pump water through inside diameter (ID) of SMP assembly to remove/displace filter cake on the exterior of the SMP; (5) continue pumping water until all of particulate-laden fluid is removed; (6) Remove compacted SMP tool and repeat previous steps with next SMP tool.
