Abstract

A method and system is disclosed for enabling invisible recalibration of an electronic gyroscope in a device.  The method and system measures a gyroscope drift when the device is steady.  Thereafter, the method and system waits until the device moves next time to compensate for the drift, thereby making the compensation less visible to the user.

Description

Modern smartphones typically contain three orientation sensors which are an accelerometer, a magnetometer and a gyroscope.  The sensors possess different characteristics such as, but not limited to, the accelerometer can be noisy, the magnetometer can be disturbed by nearby metals, and the gyroscope can tend to drift.  Applications use a blend of the three sensors for precise orientation determination.  For precise orientation determination, an approach which can be used is determining whether the device is steady or not.  The approach detects whether the accelerometer and magnetometer are steady or not.  Further, the approach calibrates the zero point of the gyroscope when the accelerometer and magnetometer are steady.  Since the gyroscope recalibration compensates for an accumulated drift, the approach is visible to the user.

Disclosed is a method and system for enabling invisible recalibration of an electronic gyroscope in a device.  The method and system measures a gyroscope drift when the device is steady.  Thereafter, the method and system waits until the device moves next time to compensate for the drift.  Accordingly, the compensation is less visible to the user as the device is moving.
