Abstract

The invention provides for the addition of a unique expandable component which improves the thermal response of single wax-element-based valves and cartridges at low flow rates. However, unlike the fixed restrictor components known in both prior art, and current products, the component expands or “grows” to accommodate higher flow rates when water demand is high. This invention effectively improves the operating flow range of not only of a thermostatic faucet, but essentially all wax-based TMV’s, including in-line thermostatic devices.

Plumbing Code bodies have mandated that all tub-filler faucets be installed with a thermostatic mixing valve (TMV) to limit and regulate maximum outlet hot water temperature, thus protecting the user from scalding.  Generally, but not necessarily, this maximum temperature is between 110°F and 120° F.  This device must be positioned at or near the point of use and can be either integrated into a faucet or be installed in-line with the faucet or other point-of-use device.  The International Plumbing Code (IPC) mandates that these in-line or integral devices meet the performance and characteristic requirements of ASSE 1070.  Similarly, the Uniform Plumbing Code (UPC) mandates the installation of a device for tub fillers to limit maximum outlet temperature to 120° F.  Additionally, users of hand sprays will benefit from the anti-scald and thermal shock safety of thermostatic faucet products.  Furthermore, faucet products with integral hand sprays are expected to require fut...
