Abstract

It is challenging to design pressure sensitive adhesives that simultaneously yield high adhesion and cohesion. Typically when the adhesive exhibits high peel adhesion, the cohesive strength is low, and conversely, when the cohesive strength is high the peel adhesion is low. It is always a trade off. A better balance between adhesion and cohesion can be achieved when pressure sensitive adhesives are reinforced with silica (or other) micro- or nano- particles. POSS are a class of recently developed and scaled-up nanoscale organosilicon compounds. The organic component and the size of the silicon cage can be specifically tuned to obtain the desired properties. For example, the organic components can be specifically chosen so that the POSS can be blended / dissolved into acrylic or rubber pressure sensitive adhesive polymers. In this invention report, we disclose acrylic and rubber pressure sensitive adhesive compositions that contain POSS. It is anticipated that these materials will yield novel and useful pressure sensitive adhesive compositions. It is expected that the materials will yield a good balance of adhesion and cohesion performance.
