Abstract

Double coated tape is commonly used to attach and hold the seat heating element in car seats during assembly and during the life of the car seat. This Invention Disclosure relates to the use of multi-layered adhesive tapes to reflect wasted heat back up towards the targeted area. Also, a version of the prototype also provides insulation type properties preventing heat from the car seat heating element affecting/ damaging other electronic systems under a car seat or other transportation methodologies. This invention is a double coated acrylic pressure sensitive plus a Foil + Scrim+ Kraft paper carrier material (FSK) coated with adhesive one each side. This product has experimentally demonstrated the effect of displacing the heat energy. In addition, a multilayered construction was also created and tested to show a substantial reduction in heat energy transferred from the source side to the opposite side. This construction is a PSA+ FSK + PSA + foam + PSA construction that operates as reflective sheeting for thermal energy as well as a fixative tape.

Nature of the Problem:                Seat heating elements provide warmth to the body before traditional air conditioning methodologies. In cold conditions, car seat heaters provide heat to the occupants before the interior of the vehicle is conditioned by the heat system. The present invention further augments the function of the seat heaters by insulating and directing the heat/thermal energy to the targeted areas. The use of the “HART” prototype reflects wasted heat back into the desired system and area. Also, the benefits to the “Hart” prototype are, but not limited to, allowing the filament to operate at lower temperatures due to reducing wasted heat, focusing heat to target areas, and further insulating heat from other critical heat sensitive applications.

This prototype would work in applications such as automotive seats, recreational vehicles, boats, as well as therapeutic applications. 

Utilization of Invention:                Avery Dennison Corporation through its Performance Tapes division sells commercial double sided tapes into this market. The tape is used as a methodology of attaching the heating filament in place during assembly and operation. 

LABORATORY EVALUATION OF INVENTION

Methods and Materials

To test the heat reflectance and insulative properties; the prototype materials  \Vcre tested \Vith a hand held heat gun and measured with Temperature Tapes  and an IR Heat gun.  A four square  inch sample  (approx) \Vas  made of the following prototypes and tested.
