Method for detecting the need for emergency battery life

If an emergency call must be placed and a battery is low on a smart phone, then the user cannot call for help.

The novel contribution is an algorithm that detects a user's environment, calculates a risk factor, and then reserves power for an emergency call.

Different environmental factors can be observed by a user's phone and used to calculate risk factors. If the risk factor is high, then the likelihood that a user will require help and need to make an emergency call via the smart phone is also high. Thus, the algorithm directs the smart phone to reserve more power for an emergency call.

The smart phone with the algorithm can detect the following risk factors based on the environment:


 Knowledge obtained from calendar entries, emails and/or text messages that the user is performing unsafe tasks (e.g., rock climbing at 3:00pm)


 Special people on the user's network might need to contact the user because of emergency (e.g., user's brother is in a car on a single lane highway driving 85 miles per hour)


 Weather conditions (e.g., severe thunderstorms predicted for the user's current location)
