Abstract

With the fast evolution of handheld devices especially smart mobile phones, the shorter batery standby time is becoming a real headache for everyone. Due to the technique or hardward limits, it is not easy to lengthen the time using traditional methods or technology. It is found that, for lots of cases, users do not need a full screen to perform many basic tasks. Based on it, the disclosure discloses one new mechanism to lengthen the battery standby time so as to ease the short standby time pain for the end users of the smart mobile phone or other handheld devices. One new mode - power saving mode is provided, thus end user has the ability to customize what area of the screen to be lightened / high-brightened in such mode. All battery power, which are consumed by the area of the screen where end user don't focus on before, are saved. As a result, the battery standy time will be lengthened greatly.

With the fast evolution of handheld devices especially smart mobile phones, the screen is becoming larger and larger, which is eating more and more power of a battery. The capacity of battery have to be increased so as to keep or lengthen the standby time. There are only two ways to lengthen the standby time: hardware side or software side. For hardware side, make bigger size battery if there's no new battery chemistry available, which will cause mobile devices heavier in the end; or adopt chips with lower energy consumption, whose improvement is very difficult due to the technique limits. For software side, automatic brightness detection/setting; and automatic sleep for inactivity; auto close the display while on the call; schedule automatic power on/off for the mobile, etc.

Above solutions are good but not enough, all of them never involve the innovation to close part of the screen to save power. Indeed, for lots of cases, users do not need a full screen(4 or 5 inches) to perform some basic tasks. It really wastes battery energy to do these actions. e.g. check current time/date; call some predefined/frequently used contacts; open an music player, select next/previous song; select airplane mode; shutdown the device; select meeting/silent mode, increase/reduce the volume and so on ...

Based on the latest development of OLED industry, her one new mechanism is invented to lengthen the battery standby time so as to ease the short standby time pain for the end users of the smart mobile phone or other handheld devices with OLED displays.

The core idea of the mechanism is to provide a new mode - power saving mode, thus end user has the ability to customize what area of the screen to be lightened / high-brightened in such mode.
