Locating File System Resources

Disclosed is a method and system for locating file system resources in a hierarchical file system based on file characteristics. The method and system uses metadata associated with the file system resources and allows a user to group an entire set of data based on pre-defined criteria.

In accordance with the method and system, a User Interface (UI) is presented to a user. The UI allows the user to navigate between different categories of data wherein the
user may select one or more categories of data in each stage. The UI provides different perspectives for different categories of data as disclosed in the Fig. 1.

The user may define rules for each perspective. For example, if a user defines rules for a timeline perspective, then the user may define if a new directory structure is based on a specific time period. The time period may be one or more of, but not limited to, a day, a week, a month and a quarter. Similarly, if the user defines rules for a file type perspective, then the user may define categories and different file types in each category. The user may group resources within a perspective view. The perspective view may include filter criteria to shape content of filter groups in the perspective view.

Additionally, the user may select one or more filter groups within a perspective to refine a set of matching resources. The one or more filter groups and perspectives are applied to a set of resources to allow refinement of display of matching resources. In an embodiment, a user may horizontally scroll perspectives when multiple perspectives have been specified. The user may swipe or use a horizontal scroll bar to navigate across multiple perspectives.

In another embodiment, the user may re-order perspectives. For example, if a user has defined a timeline perspective followed by a file type perspective, then the user can
