A method is disclosed herein for setting up digital video and still cameras with wireless interfaces to receive automatic updates from a nearby central data source regarding an event (e.g., sports game), thus intersecting the technologies found in digital devices (e.g., cameras and mobile phones) and those used in intelligent data sources. This enables enhancement of recording amateur video or digital still pictures of a sporting event, wherein key plays may be captured. A user might capture a photo of a football player catching a winning touchdown pass, where that photo only shows the immediate 10-15 feet around the player. Embodiments of the present invention provide a way for the photo to convey the circumstances with which it took place, such as the game score, time remaining, etc.

In an embodiment of the present invention, a central data source transmits real-time scores and game statistics suitable for display across the bottom of the captured photo, similar to the stamped date and time that some cameras offer users. In the case of video cameras, the disclosed method can support a feature whereby a virtual image is constantly displayed and updated in a corner of the captured image so that viewers can track score status of a filmed game without having to zoom-in to the clock at periodic intervals.
