BACKGROUND

    [0001] A problem with current identification systems for HVAC/refrigeration systems is that they are identified by the serial number of a single control unit. When the control unit is replaced or upgraded to a new control unit, then the system gets a new identification number associated with the new or upgraded control unit. What is needed is a "fingerprint" for the HVAC/refrigeration system so that it retains the same identification even when controls/parts of the system are replaced or upgraded over the life of the system.

DESCRIPTION

    [0002] The concepts described herein relate to the automatic identification of HVAC/refrigeration systems where the identification (a) is based on system component properties; (b) can use a partial match of system properties; and (c) maintains the identification despite the slow change in system properties over the life of system.

    [0003] The system properties are based on the controls of the local bus in the system. For residential and refrigeration systems using equipment from Lennox Industries, the controls are located on RSBUS and MODBUS respectively. For commercial refrigeration systems, multiple systems are located on SBUS.

    [0004] The HVAC/refrigeration system properties include unique things such as:
(a) control boards on the bus; (b) properties for each control board such as the serial number/device designator which is unique for each control board, and/or the type of control board (i.e. furnace control, evaporator control, condenser control, etc.); (c) equipment units in the system; (d) each equipment unit properties, such as type of equipment and/or equipment capacity; and (e) location of the system, such as by using GPS coordinates with sufficient resolution to distinguish between neighboring system...
