CHARGING FOR RESIDUAL VIEWS OF PAID ADVERTISEMENT IMPRESSIONS

TECHNICAL FIELD

Aspects of the present disclosure relate to the online advertising and, more particularly, to monetization of residual views of paid advertisement impressions.

BACKGROUND

On the Internet, content hosting websites or other applications allow users to upload, view, and share digital content. Such digital content may include audio clips, movie clips, TV clips, and music videos, as well as amateur content such as video blogging, short original videos, pictures, photos, etc.

As a way of generating revenue, advertisements can be associated with the content, where a viewer requesting the content has the option to view the advertisements upon selecting to view the content or is required to view the advertisements to view the content. An organization can pay a fee to have a certain advertisement associated with certain content with the hope that a viewer of the advertisement and the content will be persuaded to purchase the organization's good or services, or otherwise respond in a certain way to the advertisement.

In an implementation, a method includes causing an advertisement to be presented on a user device to a user, in response to distribution of the advertisement based on an action of the user, determining a number of downstream views of the advertisement, and determining, by the server computing system, a fee based on the number of downstream views of the advertisement.

In an implementation, the action of the user can include liking the advertisement, commenting on the advertisement, or sharing the advertisement. The number of downstream views of the advertisement can be determined via a tracking pixel.

Determining the number of downstream views of the advertisement can include creating a duplicate of the advertisement, and tracking a number of views of the duplicate advertisement. The action can have an action ID, and determining the number of downstream views of the advertisement can include, for each downstream view of the advertisement, recording the action ID.

In an implementation, a method includes detecting distribution of an advertisement, updating an entry in a data store to indicate that the advertisement has been distributed, integrating a tracking pixel into the advertisement, detecting access of the advertisement via the tracking pixel, in response to detecting access of the advertisement, updating, the entry to indicate that the advertisement has been accessed, and determining a number of accesses of the advertisement based on the updated entry.

In an implementation, detecting distribution of the advertisement can include detecting distribution of the advertisement on a third party service. The tracking pixel can access a uniform resource locator associated with the advertisement in response to a web browser accessing the...
