A smarter method for replying message by drag and drop on touch screen devices

Real time communication tools such as Instant Messaging (IM) have been growing at a phenomenal rate over the past few years. It allows users to exchange message instantly or within negligible latency that takes out learning, working, collaboration experience to another level.

Generally, IM applications feature two "panes", one editing pane for composing a message and the other pane for displaying the stream of conversion. Users type message in the editing pane and click submit button which sends the message to the display pane that all participants see the same sequence of messages. As a chat continues and numerous participants join/leave the chat, there is an increasingly likelihood that the original topic will diverge into multiple different topics. When more than one topic is discussed in parallel, a chat participant could find that it's hard to respond to a specific earlier comment. As a result, the conversion script can easily become confusing.

To address the conversation transcript ambiguity concerns, many IM applications provide conversation threading mechanisms with which the participants are allowed to respond to certain portion of the previous comments. There are a variety of implementation methods. Generally speaking, the strategies can be classified into 2 types. Although the existing techniques eliminate the difficulties of navigating the conversation flow, they are mainly designed for desktop IM and are inconvenient for touch screen users for the following reasons:

Existing Replying to Specific Message Methods

Apply Existing Replying to Specific Message Methods on Touch Screen IM Method 1

* A chat participant can easily copy the previous comment, paste it in the editing pane and add his/her personal comment.

* If the participant only wants to reply to a portion of the previous comment, it's also easy to specify the desired text portion.

* For touch screen devices, it usually requires the participant to long touch a message and then move the bars slowly and carefully to specify the portion.

* The user then needs to long touch to copy and paste the message and then input the reply message.

Method 2

* While right clicking is simple in desktop based IM applications, for touch screen devices, realizing right clicking function actions through fingers is often complicated. Besides, for touch screen users, it's not easy to navigate multiple windows.

* A chat participant can right click a message and start a new chat thread in a new chat window.

As a result, the invention aims to propose a more efficient and intuitive way of replying message on touch screen devices. By dragging the replying text box and dropping to the previous comment, the method will automatically copy the previous comment followed with the replying text.
