Abstract

Disclosed is a system and method to track, over time, the portions of songs on a playlist that a user has skipped, and then automatically skip those portions in future play sessions. This removes the need for the user to interact with a media device to alter the playing of a song.

System and Method for Determination and Partial Playback of Media

Often users listen to music or other media while performing tasks such as cleaning, running, driving, etc. when it is not possible or advisable to interact with the device. Additionally, many of these songs or media contain portions that a user does not like and skips when it is possible to interact with the device.

A method is needed that enables a user to skip portions of a song or end a song and proceed to the next without interacting with a device.

The novel and non-obvious system and method track, over time, the portions of songs that a user has skipped, and then automatically skips those portions in future play sessions.

The system tracks when a user skips portions of a song. This can be based on a point in time and/or on the waveform pattern of certain part of song. This can include tracking whether the user fast-forwarded to another portion of the song or skipped to next song in the list.

The system adds a marker to the song at the points at which the user stopped the regular play. The system may store data in a separate file (e.g., Extensible Markup Language (XML)), for the song ID and the parts to skip.

The system can then alter the play of music playlist. It queries the data stored for user behavior associated with a song and then alters the play accordingly. It may skip when a certain part is reached may skip entire sections when said sections are reached.
