One of the most vulnerable and common devices found in modern factories and workshops are personal computer electronics, displays, and printers. These devices were not designed for such an environment, and internal dust accumulation is one of the main causes of computer reliability problems or premature failure. These problems are exacerbated with the inclusion of active optical cables used in today's servers

    The method and features described in the disclosure increase the optical integrity of the active optical cable. Current known solutions involve use of dust covers or require additional maintenance and tools. However, dust can settle during installation and servicing, and cleaning can easily be neglected. The following device shows a unique integral method to automatically remove dust on optical cable insertion.

    A device within an optical connector applies one of the described methods of cleaning to the mating faces of the connector. Upon insertion, the mechanical plug force activates the cleaning method such that any dust or contaminant on the surface of the optical link is removed. The removal of the dust at this stage of the plug ensures a clean surface contained within the plugged optical link. This cleaning process is reusable and performed again in the event of any re-plugging that may occur in maintenance or servicing (see the figure below).
