Adaptive Array Headlight

The majority of vehicles have two headlight settings: high beams and low beams. The industry is only now starting to implement variable brightness headlights. This technology is still not intelligent and requires the driver to constantly adjust the brightness as needed to keep from distracting or blinding other drivers while still trying to see objects on either side of dark highways and roads.

The novel contribution is an adaptive headlight array system, in which portions of the array remain at full brightness while others are dimmed as necessary to keep from distracting other drivers or the driver of the vehicle.

The system effectively consists of a new type of headlight that is formed by an array of variable brightness collimated light sources, a vision system, a computer, and a computational algorithm. Each light source in the headlight array is collimated, to emit the majority of the light in a specific direction. Each light source is aimed to project in a different direction than the others. Some overlap occurs between the areas, in order to completely cover the same angular area as current headlights.

The vision system detects areas in which other cars exist (e.g., detecting brake lights of vehicles in front of the driver and headlights of oncoming traffic), and in response dims the appropriate source that is sending light toward that area.
