Abstract

To track the performance status of the aircraft, components of an aircraft are monitored. After collecting data for various components, a monitoring system may be used to draw conclusions and make decisions related to the components overall performance. At present however, component performance is only tracked at a given stage of its lifecycle and only one or two metrics are considered. But, considering only one or two metrics at a given stage does not provide a complete picture of the component’s present and future situation. Hence, there is a need for a system that accurately helps in estimating a component’s health for better decision making. The proposed method develops a model by linking various metrics during the product’s lifecycle and the model is used to identify and prioritize product improvements opportunities.

But, considering only one or two metrics at a given stage does not provide a complete picture of the component's present and future situation. Hence, there is a need for a system that accurately helps in estimating a component's health for better decision making. The proposed method develops a model by linking various metrics during the product's lifecycle and the model is used to identify and prioritize product improvements opportunities.

1. Introduction

The objective of a monitoring system is to have reliable and predictable operations and to accurately estimate any maintenance requirements. A monitoring system will not stop a component from malfunctioning, but will log system data from which a component's performance characteristics can be deduced. This provides relevant data on the status of the component and to plan the maintenance schedules.

In the current practice, performance of a component is tracked only at a particular stage of its lifecycle and very few metrics are considered. Considering only a few metrics at a given lifecycle stage does not provide an accurate view of the component's health

during its complete life. Further, at present there is no mechanism for linking the metrics between various component lifecycle stages. Hence, it is difficult to make intelligent decisions and to manage or initiate product improvement programs. Additionally, in the past it required a huge amount of manual work to process the associated data and compute the overall product performance for each of its lifecycle stages.

Hence, there is a need to implement a solution that addresses the limitations mentioned above.

2. Solution

The proposed solution addresses the above mentioned limitations of existing systems by developing a model that accurately estimates the need of product improvements by linking various metrics for a components lifecycle.

The models are built with respect to platform, manufacturing site, or product type. The model is developed in such a way that we can customize it to any function(s) within the organization. Opportunities for improving the products based on various metrics can be identified and the required actions to improve them can be taken.

The proposed model uses metric weights to rank the products performance on given platforms. The weights are applied...
