Abstract

Disclosed is a method for bandwidth conservation that uses an awareness of the actual usage of networked consuming devices. If a consuming device is not actively in use, then the method enables the system to suspend or throttle bandwidth-consuming activities until active usage of the device resumes.

Conserving available bandwidth using knowledge of consuming devices' actual usage

Often network bandwidth is limited and must be shared between multiple devices on a network. Streaming media can consume significant bandwidth (e.g. high definition television (TV)); if it is needlessly active, this can negatively affect the performance of other devices sharing the network bandwidth.

The solution is a method for bandwidth conservation that uses an awareness of the actual usage of networked consuming devices. If a consuming device is not actively in use, then the method enables the system to suspend or throttle bandwidth-consuming activities until active usage of the device resumes.

Many known means can be used to determine if a device is actually being used. For a high-definition (HD) television, for example, a system can detect the physical presence
in a room, remote control button presses, or use feedback from a device to track eye movement. When interaction with the HDTV is detected, the system then monitors activity to determine when active watching of the HDTV starts and stops. When a configured non-usage threshold is surpassed, then the system enables the TV to take selectable actions to reduce bandwidth. These can include switching the display to a lower resolution (e.g., from High Definition to Standard Definition format) or pausing the display of the channel. When the system detects that active usage is resumed, then the system can reverse the bandwidth-sav...
