REST-ful Networked Switches and Sensors to Trigger REST Commands

Disclosed is a system and method for a generic, programmable RESTful switch or controller that would interface with ANY REST-based system utilizing representational state transfer
( REST) commands.

Many modern residential and commercial infrastructure, control systems, and devices are being configured to respond to commands invoked through REST-ful web services.

While RESTful interfaces are beginning to appear in home and building control and in other areas, the devices which control these systems are targeted specifically to those systems. A generic, programmable RESTful switch or controller / switch (ie. wall outlet, mobile switches, sensors) that allows for simplified control, configuration and unification of all devices provides a simple means to control devices. The system comprises a stand-alone controller or group of controllers rather than a controller into which other devices can be plugged-in. Virtually any network/protocol which would allow communications via HTTP/REST, though this should not preclude the ability to connect non-REST devices to the microcontroller module to REST-enable them. Devices which either have REST-based interfaces or which are front-ended by REST-based controllers would work with an inexpensive hardware controller with a REST interface that could trigger one or more REST calls over a network. The controller's REST interface would provide a means to upload the REST commands or calls which should be generated when the controller is operated or activated. In case of a simple switch, a REST command would be sent over the network when the switch is triggered, and a return value would optionally be displayed on an integrated status indicator. In more complex cases, a rotary selector might allow selection of a device or command (displayed on the con...
