Abstract

The present invention proposes a technique for using terminal boards, dedicated for a particular input IO type, with a universal input IO module. The terminal boards are either with simplex, dual or triple redundancy with fanned input. The input IO type includes 4-20 milliampere (mA) input, thermocouple, resistance temperature detector (RTD) and contact input, among others. The technique is for development of a system, more particularly, the universal input IO module that interfaces to the terminal boards that offer redundancy by fanning signal from a sensor. The invention includes a single IO PACK that utilizes a single fab with different bill of material (BOM) groups.

BACKGROUND

The present invention relates generally to a terminal board and more particularly to a universal input output (IO) module which interfaces to the terminal board.

Generally, architecture of a control system, such as, a human-machine-interface, is based on terminal board and input output package (IO PACK) concept. The IO PACK includes acquisition and processor. One advantage of the control system architecture is ability to replace faulty redundant PACK while retaining field wire connectivity.

A conventional technique includes a set of terminal boards to suit required redundancy levels for various IO types. However, the conventional technique requires development and maintenance efforts.

It would be desirable to have a technique to reduce development and maintenance efforts of the terminal board.

BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWING

Figure 1 depicts block diagram, which includes the particular input IO type utilizing a three-point terminal block (TB).

Figure 2 depicts functional block schematic of single chip analog front-end chip.

Figure 3 depicts functional block diagram of another single chip analog front-end chip.

DETAILED DESCRIPTION

The present invention proposes a technique for using terminal boards, dedicated for a particular input IO type, with a universal input IO module. The terminal boards are either with simplex, dual or triple redundancy with fanned input. The input IO type includes 4-20 milliampere (mA) input, thermocouple, resistance temperature detector (RTD) and contact input, among others. The technique is for development of a system, more particularly, the universal input IO module that interfaces to the terminal boards that offer redundancy by fanning signal from a sensor. The invention further includes a single PACK, which utilizes a single fab with different bill of material (BOM) groups.

The technique also proposes utilization of single chip analog front-end integrated circuits (ICs), for development of universal input IO module.

Figure 1 depicts block diagram, which includes the particular input IO type utilizing a three-point terminal block (TB).
