Determining Nutrition Values Using A Mobile Device

Disclosed is a method and system for determining nutrition value of a food item using a mobile device. The method and system allows a user to capture one or more photos of a restaurant menu which includes a list of food items or dishes. Based on the food items identified in the menu, nutritional value for each food item is determined.

In accordance with the method and system, initially, a user captures one or more photos of a restaurant menu as illustrated in Fig. 1.

Figure 1

The menu will include a list of food items or dishes that may be ordered in a restaurant. Optical Character Recognition (OCR) may be used to identify text in the one or more images that have been captured by the mobile device. In an embodiment, the image may be converted into a text format. Once the image is converted to a readable text format a delimiter is used to identify an individual food item. Further, each individual food item is stored contiguously in memory with no gaps between each other and listed in an array format. Each food item is compared against a food dictionary. The food dictionary includes nutrition facts of each food item such as calorie value, vitamins etc. The method and system utilizes the food dictionary to identify the nutritional value associated with the food items and creates an array as illustrated in Fig. 2.
