Terrain Based Coordinate Correlation Navigation

While driving a vehicle, often only the driver's visual ability ensures a successful trip from point A to point B. Mapping technologies such as Global Positioning Systems (GPS) applications guide drivers to a designated destination based on cataloged topology information. These technologies allow drivers to identify the shortest routes, least congested routes, most scenic routes, etc.

Current GPS technology does not provide a correlation of vehicle characteristics to the known topology of the terrain. A driver does not have an automated means to determine, for example, whether the vehicle can safely travel through a narrow space,

make a tight turn, etc.

A mobile/social application is needed that can correlate terrain topology with specific vehicle characteristics to better identify road accessibility, vehicle action feasibility (e.g., U-turn etc.), and accident avoidance.

The novel contribution is a system that leverages existing technologies to correlate terrain topology with vehicle characteristics to deliver real time vehicle specific guidance.

Leveraging accessible data sources, both commercial and free, data about weather, terrain, topology, and vehicle state are regularly fed to databases within the Terrain Based Coordinate Correlation Navigation System. This data is then correlated against user specific data to provide real-time guidance that is specific to a user's location and vehicle.
