Network Usage

Smart mobile devices access various types of networks. A typical scenario is to access cellular data networks and Wi-Fi networks. There can be speed, cost, and capability advantages to using one network type versus another. However, when moving around with a mobile device, availability of network types can change, or there may be gaps in coverage area for a given network type.

Known solutions may facilitate a transition from one network type to another when network access is lost. This can result in a transition to a network that is more costly to use or more limited in capability. Further, applications actively using the network may not continue to seamlessly function with a transition of network types.

The novel contribution is a method and system to allow a seamless transition of mobile network access. This includes knowledge of previously seen networks and geographical awareness to transition from one network to another without using other wireless networks types. With this method, when network access is lost, the smart device pauses network usage. Based on current movement, the system determines if the device is moving into an area, within an acceptable amount of time, which is known to have had previous network access. Once within range of the known network, of the same or similar type, the system restores network access.
