Abstract

The number of view is one of the most important indicators in social media statistics, including number of forward and number of comment. These indicators are the base of smart sorting, influence analysis and some other social media analysis. This paper aims to provide a new way to identify if a post has been viewed by its length and duration in visible area on mobile devices.

Number of View Statistic Method in Social Media on Mobile

The number of view is one of the most important indicators in social media statistics, including number of forward and number of comment. These indicators are the base of smart sorting, influence analysis and some other social media analysis.

For number of forward and comment, we could have accurate statistics by users' operation. But for number of view, the users' behavior is more complex, quite different from click-through operation in traditional forum and blog. So we could not keep on using traditional method for number of view statistics.

Currently we could have two ways of the # of view statistics.

One of them is calculation by the click-through operation. But in current social media, we could have some short posts, like micro-blog with only 1-2 sentences. Users would no longer need to click and open the post for reading. The calculation by the click-through operation may lead to errors in statistics.

The other way is calculation according to the data load statistics. For example, after one user logs in micro-blog and 50 latest posts are loaded and ready for read. In the 2

way, all these 50 posts will be marked as viewed by this user. Obviously this is not accurate enough.

The disadvantage of current methods:

1. Cannot fulfill the statistic requirement, especially for modern social media like micro-blog.

2. Not accurate enough.

In this disclosure, a more accurate method of number of view statistics in social media on mobile device would be described.

The core idea of this disclosure is to identify if a post has been viewed by its length and duration in visible area on mobile devices.

The main advantage of our solution is,

1. More accurate than existing methods. Some viewed posts without click-through operation have been counted. Only the context which has been displayed in visible area for a period would be counted as viewed. Some loaded but not viewed posts are excluded.

2. Consideration of the post length and some other factors like screen resolution, font size, even model of mobile device would help to improve the accuracy of statistics.

3. This method is an enhancement and has no conflict with traditional statistic method.
