Abstract

An electrostatic discharge (ESD) simulator is used primarily as a standard reference tool for an ESD sensing device. The ESD sensing device is calibrated relative to the peak voltage waveform emitted by the ESD simulator over a series of distance ā€œDā€. The voltage waveform emitted by the ESD simulator is created by activating a relay switch which discharges the charged capacitor through a resistor and load circuit. The discharge creates an electromagnetic field with peak voltage that is proportional to the charging voltage. The voltage read from the ESD sensing device must be equal or close to the applied voltage value of the ESD simulator. The ESD simulator is an apparatus that serves to simulate a specific ESD discharge event in a repeatable manner. The apparatus is helpful in the evaluation of existing ESD sensing devices and as a reference for calibration and verification. The apparatus is portable with a self-contained power supply rechargeable battery, an interchangeable ESD model circuit, a remote triggering, and a voltage indicator.
