Abstract

The invention includes a technique to mount a biopsy positioner on a compression system in the X-ray mammography system. The technique provides degree of freedom (DOF) acquired by the compression arm to move the biopsy positioner. DOF allows a user to adapt position of the biopsy positioner to a breast thickness. The technique provides minimized Z travel range embedded in the biopsy positioner. Minimized Z travel range provides smaller and more compact design. Stiffness for the lateral approach is increased compared to other conventional designs where the biopsy positioner plug-in point is far.

FIELD OF INVENTION

The invention generally relates to an X-ray mammography system and more particularly to a biopsy positioner mounted on a gantry compression system in an X-ray compression system.

BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION

An add-on biopsy system includes a biopsy positioner.  The biopsy positioner is mounted either on a detector arm or an integrated breast support. Some of the biopsy system includes their own compression system integrated with them, wherein, translation of the compression by the compression system is utilized to move the biopsy positioner. Without utilizing the gantry compression system, the biopsy system includes compression function integrated in the biopsy positioner.  Integration of compression function results in expensive and heavier biopsy positioner. FIG. 1 depicts the biopsy positioner mounted on either a breast support or a detector arm.

A conventional technique utilizes the compression system of a mammography gantry to compress the breast during biopsy.  However, the conventional technique does not utilize translation provided by the gantry compression carriage to move the biopsy positioner.

Hence there exists a need for an efficient technique to move the biopsy positioner in an X-ray mammography system.
