Abstract

An Engineering Change Order (ECO) base cell is designed with some of its applications. The cell has one NMOS, one PMOS, one feed through path, two power supply lines and some metal connection lines.  The metal lines can be configured to form different functional cells.

1.    Problems with conventional ECO cell

Stand cells are normally used as ECO cells.  These extra logic cells are predefined as inverter, NAND, NOR, XOR, MUX, flip-flop, etc. The function of each stand cell is inalterable.  Thus, it’s not easy to find an available ECO cell within a limited region.

2.    Proposed configurable ECO cell

We propose a new ECO cell with a feed through path.  The cell includes one NMOS, one PMOS, a feed through path and some metal connection lines.  The cell can be programmed to different functions in ECO simply by changing internal metal1 or external routing.  The redundancy routing can be achieved by a feed through pin.  The redundancy routing can be used in ECO routing to reduce ECO layers.

The ECO cell can be used as a decoupling capacitance cell in default.  For an ECO, this cell can be configured to an inverter, tie high and tie low by internal metal one, can be programmed to buffer, NAND, NOR and other cells by outside metal routing. The schematic and layout of the proposed ECO cell are shown in Fig. 1.
