Abstract

A method and system for enabling a personality directed search is disclosed. The method and system interprets a query and rewrites the query as a question. The question is routed to an appropriate personality for answering. The personality can include a person, robot or celebrity. Based on the routed question, a personality influenced result set is displayed.

Method and System for Enabling a Personality Directed Search

Abstract

A method and system for enabling a personality directed search is disclosed.  The method and system interprets a query and rewrites the query as a question.  The question is routed to an appropriate personality for answering.  The personality can include a person, robot or celebrity. Based on the routed question, a personality influenced result set is displayed.

Description

Generally, a search query displays results based on a database of real world people, places, things and connections.  Most search engines use clustering to provide search results or group results by a topic.  A “Previous Query and Adaptive Search” uses previous queries to provide context for subsequent search results.  Typically, a virtual assistant enables a user to activate the virtual assistants with phrases to trigger a search query.  For example, the phrase can be “start XYZ”. The virtual assistant provides an individual persona to whom queries are addressed.  The persona needs to look for non-explicit signals to add context to differentiate between the potential meanings intended by a searcher.  The virtual assistant does not provide a way to address requests to different personalities.

Disclosed is a method and system for enabling a personality directed search.  The method and system interprets queries that can be rewritten as questions and routed to an appropriate personality for answering.  The questions can be routed either in real-time or previously run queries can be routed.  Based on the routed question, a personality influenced result set is displayed.

The personality influenced result set can change based on several fundamental changes to a search stack.  The personality influenced result set depends on a query interpretation, a middleware query rewrite, a federation, a post-retrieval ranking and a final presentation.  During the query interpretation, the system determines if the query was intent to ask a question or a question directed towards a specific personality.  During federation, the system determines if the query needs to be sent to specific backend that skew the results particular to the personality representation.  During post retrieval ranking, the system identifies results to be ranked to best represent the personality.  During the final presentation, the system presents results to communicate if the results differ from more industry standard search results.

In one implementation, during understanding and disambiguating the query, the method and system recognizes whether a certain personality is addressed as part of the query.  Accordingly, during the rewriting of queries based on retrieval of context-specific data, the method and system determines if a searcher is addressing a persona with questions or searching for a string including a persona.  The query can then be rewritten into a question using keywords or one of a fixed number of supported cel...
