Disclosed is a method and apparatus for deciding an appropriate timeout value of the communication between two independent computer systems especially for unstable (lossy or poor quaility network) environment and based on charging online time. It is important to define the appropriate timeout value to optimize communication cost.

Background:

In some business area, communication between computer systems is costly due to limited way of communications. In general, it is important to reduce communication cost. But with the unstable network (lossy or poor quality...). A ship is the typical of this mater. Communication is done using satellite link which is costly and time dependent charge. Of course the communication stability is affected by weather, geographic position, solar wind and flare, cosmic radiation, antenna direction...etc and also vary with the date size. Of course, communication is maintained in many tiers, but end-to-end communication still vary with these conditions. To detect the communication in each end, the system waits for the response or detects time out.

If the time out value is too large and communication is lost, the system would wait for the response until detecting time out. If time out value is too short to complete the communication, data transmission would never be completed. Therefore, to decide an appropriate optimize the useless communication time such as waiting for the response in either side (break by communication time out) is important to save cost. In ordinal cases, a time out value is decided by enough long time to complete the communication.

Main Idea:

It is OK if the data size would be in some range or order and bandwidth would be large enough compared to the data size. But, in this particular case, data size is from some KB to GB, and bandwidth is about in 128Kbit - 512Kbit with unstable network, so it is impossible to determine the time out...
