Method and System for Cooling Computer Installations Using a Computer Rack Cooling System

Disclosed is a method and system for providing cooling for small computer installations and containerized data centers using a computer rack cooling system. The method and system enables air to enter the computer rack cooling system for cooling the small computer installations and containerized data centers. The method and system selects a cooling method to be utilized by the computer rack cooling system. The cooling method is one of a direct air cooling and an indirect air cooling. The direct air cooling method cools equipment inside the small computer installations and containerized data centers directly using the air. The indirect air cooling method cools the equipment using a rack level economizer. The method and system also selects the air for cooling the small computer installations and containerized data centers. The air is one of outside fresh air and air inside a room. The method and system selects the cooling method and the air based on various factors. The factors are, but need not be limited to, energy efficiency, temperature, humidity, particulates and corrosive gasses in the air.

The rack level economizer is deployed in one or more forms. The one or more forms are, but need not be limited to, half a rack form (with the other half reserved for

servers), full rack form (adjacent to a full rack of servers) and a cooling system for a containerized data center. The rack level economizer uses one or more heat exchange mechanisms. The one or more heat exchange mechanisms are, but need not be limited to, water to air heat exchanger, a radiator, a heat pipe assembly and a Kyoto

wheel assembly.

Fig. 1 illustrates the rack level economizer deployed in the half a rack form to be used

with one or more of the radiator and the heat pipe assembly.
