Elderly people often live alone and end up in situations where they are injured or ill and unable to contact anyone due to being incapacitated.

The drawback of current solutions is that they are:


Expensive to install and thus not amenable to the financial situation of a vast proportion of elderly people.

Do not provide 100% coverage within the person's home, inside and out.

Do not provide the ability to engage with the person regardless of where they are located.

    The core idea is that the sensors on a mobile phone device will be used to determine the activeness of a person and the processing capabilities will be used to determine if something out of the norm with regards to the person's behavior is occurring. Upon recognizing a potential problem the system will attempt to engage

with the person. If this fails, then the system will alert other parties of a potential problem.

    Whilst there are systems in existence that are used to achieve the same end result, the emphasis here is on utilizing the capabilities of smart phones; this is the novel aspect.

  There are a few advantages to this approach - these are listed below: Current solutions of installing cameras and motion detectors in a house are not likely to provide 100% coverage. A mobile phone is convenient for a person to carry with them, so they can be constantly monitored, thus providing 100% coverage inside and outside of the house.

Current solutions of installing cameras and motion sensors are expensive. Mobile phones are relatively cheap and widely available.

Current solutions do not have the ability to engage with the person regardless of their location. A mobile phone can directly engage with a person regardless of

  where they are located inside or outside of their house. System Requirements

  This idea requires a mobile phone with the follow components: An OS capable of running custom applications e.g. Android, iOS Proximity Sensor
Accelerometer
RBG light Sensor
GPS signal
Thermometer

Optionally the idea could also have:


NFC chip in the phone for interacting with NFC tags. Bluetooth capability in the phone
Bluetooth heart rate monitor
Bluetooth pedometer
