Abstract

Disclosed is a metering method for pay-per-use cloud infrastructure system resource using hardware error log information. The method includes a management server to collect usage data from managed servers and creates reports for a lease bill. The management server reads power on/off histories from service logs on a managed server non-volatile storage and automatically generates a usage report. The process does not allow tampering and secures the accurate and valid usage report.

Introduction

A Cloud business requires huge advanced investments, and the cost and risks affect profitability and have been a major management challenge.

This paper discloses a metering mechanism for a pay-per-use finance offering for MSP (Managed Service Providers) or cloud service providers, which enables them to reduce investments and ROI based payments to avoid negative cash flows.

Background

A structure of cloud business largely depends on investments on infrastructures anticipating future business growth. It starts with financially in red, but produces profits once it reaches a break-even point. Traditionally, MSP or cloud providers drive business with such investment plans. However, the market competition is increasing and more investments are required for differentiation and customer acquisitions. While end users of cloud service expect on-demand use without risks of advanced investments, cloud providers have to face strong cost pressures and profitability risks.

Pay-per-use finance offering and metering

To respond to the cost challenges and achieve positive profitability, MSP or cloud providers need to change system procurement from "purchase" to "pay-per use" model. A "pay-per use" model requires system usage metering method. As cloud environments have a mass number of systems, the metering method has to be easy to implement and operate. It needs to be tamper-free at the same time to secure fair and correct business billing and paying. This paper presents a metering method that fulfill those requirements. The method installs a management server in addition to servers for a cloud resource pool to collect usage information and create a report for billing. U...
