Abstract

The present invention proposes a technique for scraping or wiping of a gate valve stem. The technique creates a barrier preventing particles from entering into a sensitive seal area. The technique provides functionality in same envelope of series of the gate valve with minimum geometry changes. This is accomplished by enhancement of a component of a packing stack known as a pak-ring. Modification to the pak-ring element enables feature to continue to perform its original function.

BACKGROUND

The present invention relates generally to a gate valve and more particularly to an enhancement of a pak-ring component in the gate valve’s polymer nested in-series stem packing.

Integrity of both manual and actuated gate valves in pressure environment is dependent on the polymer nested in-series stem packing.  The gate valve’s polymer is susceptible to damage by well bore particles that are linearly drawn into packing by actuator stroke or by well bore pressures.

A conventional technique includes a linear rising stem design with hard-faced seal area. This allows option of a cartridge to provide metal scrap of stem before the linear rising stem design enters sensitive seal area.  However, the conventional technique does not work on a surface valve, as the stem is not usually hard-faced.


It would be desirable to have an efficient technique to prevent bore particles to enter into sensitive seal areas.

BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWING

Figure 1 depicts modification to the pak-ring features to reverse pressure containment of packing and function of wiping in accordance with an embodiment of the present invention.

DETAIL DESCRIPTION

The present invention proposes a technique for scraping or wiping of a gate valve stem. The technique creates a barrier to prevent abrasive particles from entering into a sensitive seal area. The technique provides functionality in same envelope of series of the gate valve with minimum geometry changes. This is accomplished by enhancement of a component of a packing stack known as a pak-ring. Modification to the pak-ring feature enables the sealing stack element to continue to perform its original function. Original function includes reverse pressure-containment through mechanical energization and structural support of packing sealing elements.
