Abstract

This invention is related to a workflow to design a relief well trajectory with specified drilling profiles. The objective is to provide logic, systematic and instant way to define and refine a relief well plan in 3 Dimension. To achieve this objective, the software will allow the user to input basic information on the ranging tools, drilling tools, measuring instruments, and blowout well (for example, blowout well trajectory, expected interception point, well head location rules including geological, geographical, and meteorological information nearby the blowout well). The software will automatically generate an optimized relief well trajectory that satisfies all the rules from design and operation on it.

A relief well is drilled to intercept an oil or gas well that has experienced a blowout. Specialized liquid, such as heavy (dense) drilling mud followed by cement, can then be pumped down the relief well in order to stop the flow from the reservoir in the damaged well. Relief well plan is mandatory for every offshore well. In reality relief well itself is a complex 3D system that is limited by multiple criteria (for example well head location rules due to the wind, ranging distance limited by the available ranging tools, and/or inclination restricted by the drilling tools, etc.), which normally cost an experienced drilling engineer significant amount of efforts on designing and adjusting a relief well plan manually.

Detailed Description of the Invention

The objective of this invention is to create a workflow to generate a relief well trajectory that satisfies all the business rules which will significantly improve the efficiency of designing a relief well.

Before the details are descried, here are the definitions of some terminologies that will be used in the details:

·         Interception point: Interception point is the location on the blowout well that is communicated to the relief well. 

·         Crossover point: Crossover point is a location on the relief well that crosses the blowout well in terms of certain user specified view in 3D space. It is required and designed to ensure the ranging tools can actually ‘see’ the blowout well with maximum possibility.
