Alert System for Group Chats

A method is needed to allow users engaged in lengthy group chats to follow individual conversation threads, especially when answering a specific question amidst multiple exchanges.

One existing solution offers a filtering system that sends an alert to a user when it identifies predefined key words . [*] It uses a keyword database that is maintained by the user. However, this solution requires the use of a local database and user intervention in order to predefine all the keywords in the database. This method is inconvenient, as it is not standard for all application or messaging systems.

The novel contribution is a system that enables a user to directly address another group chat participant by mentioning the user , and then sends an alert to the addressee. This enables all group participants to follow multiple conversation threads, answer direct questions, and respond to direct references.

One group chat participant can enter a direct mention of another participant, using a standard nomenclature for all the users in the messaging system (e.g., @username).

The intended user receives a notification/alert (either a sound and/or visual alert) of the mention. In addition, the mentioned user receives a link in the notification to the row or part of the chat in which the mention occurred was mentioned . This appears in a color different from the rest of the chat boxes. The alerts specifications can be configured in the user system preferences .

The mentioned participant (i.e., alert recipient) can also scroll up to the row in which the mentioned occurred. The user can also create a quick reference (i.e. link) in the chat box to the row in which the name was mentioned by the other user. This should allow t...
