Abstract

Tape is a kind of liner magnetic storage device rolled onto a reel. How to destroy it after it is discarded to prevent leakage of secrets is important, especially for government and business enterprise. This disclosure will describe a method to destroy the magnetic tape storage media. we add a mechanical arm inside of the magnetic tape driving device which has a cutter to cut the tape strip when necessary. This method can complete destroying with simple operation and low cost to ensure that information can't be recovered forever.

Tape is a kind of liner magnetic storage device rolled onto a reel. Compare with disk, it's cheaper and portable so that is widely used to store data. How to destroy it after it is discarded to prevent leakage of secrets is important, especially for government and business enterprise. This disclosure will describe a method to destroy the magnetic tape storage media.

Currently there are some ways which can destroy the magnetic tape but have limitations:
1. Destroy the tape storage media physically. Such as use destruction machine to shred it. It requires have additional cost to buy the machine.
2. Demagnetize the tape. Separate device is needed. Such as: the demagnetizing machine.

3. Delete data on tape directly. But it's easy to be restored back using software method.

4. Burn tapes using fire, it is one of the easiest way but generated toxic gas to pollute the air.

In this invention, we add a mechanical arm inside of the magnetic tape driving device which has a cutter to cut the tape strip when necessary. This method can complete destroying with simple operation and low cost to ensure that information can't be recovered forever.

We bring a new method to destroy magnetic tape in this disclosure. A mechanical arm is added inside of the magnetic tape driving device. On the top of the arm, there is a cutter which is used to cut the tape trips longitudinally to destroy the magnetic tape. If cutting the tape horizontally, it has the potential risk to leak the information by pieces of slice.

Because most of the data storage location information is stored in the head section of the tape roll, if this part is destroyed by longitudinal shear, the data of the tape cannot be gotten without the location information.
