Abstract

The article describes a method where the position of external monitors in a windowing system is configured automatically. This is done by taking the real world position of each attached monitor and converting it to a 2D coordinate system suitable for use by the windowing system. It will have the further effect of allowing a user to move a monitor and have their windowing system update the monitor configuration in real time, with no extra user input.

Currently technology allows for the connection of an external monitor by using a High-Definition Multimedia Interface (HDMI) cable or a wireless HDMI device. A problem with this is that this connection does not give the computer the position of the external monitor so a user must go in and manually configure where it exists virtually on the operating system. If the monitor is moved then a user must go into the operating system options and move the monitor so it stays consistent with where it is physically.

Below are two diagrams demonstrating the current problem

Diagram 1: When the monitor is connected it must be set up in the display options to be positioned above the laptop screen.

Diagram 2: When it is moved the virtual position is not updated, meaning the user must manually configure it.

    This disclosure describes a two part wireless HDMI port system which would communicate to the computer the monitor's physical position. The computer then calculates where to position the monitor in virtual space so that as the monitor is moved in the physical world its position is updated virtually, eliminating the need for additional configuration.

    The monitor driver on the operating system will be modified to automatically position the screen in 2D space relative to the laptop screen by using two wireless sensors in each HDMI dongle.
