Vehicles sold in North America are required to perform Evap leak detection as part of OBDII requirements. Green states required to monitor for 0.02" leaks as part of the Clean Air Act Section 177. (CAA) IN MY2017, all states have to perform 0.02" leak tests.Warranty data consistently shows that the Canister Purge Valve (CPV) is one of the biggest leak sources in the Evap system. Contamination from the CPV welding process, packaging material, intake manifold oils, carbon canister dust all contribute to causing the CPV to leak. The current CPV design has a single point of contact for sealability. This type of design makes it prone to leak even with the slightest contamination. Leaky CPVs can also cause damage to the fuel tank from excessive vacuum and driveability issues such as engine stalls, surges and hesitations.

Method

The improved design makes the CPV more robust to slight contamination by redesigning the sealing mechanism assembly. The design includes redundant sealing to provide more surface area to allow for a better sealing function across the valve. If one point of contact does not seal, then the other is likely to seal. The double point of contact is also an effective self-cleaning mechanism for dislodging any contamination inside the CPV.
