Method of Automating Rediscovery of Software Failures through Log Analysis

When a software failure occurs, a provider's customers must consult error logs and other artifacts to determine the cause . Often, the cause cannot be discovered, so the customer must contact technical support services for assistance. The service representative must search through the record systems to determine whether the same or a similar problem is known and then provide an answer to the customer. This is a time consuming and costly process.

This novel contribution is a Serviceability Log Analysis component and a Rediscovery Engine to automate the process of searching for the problem.

The Rediscovery Engine works as follows:

1. Rediscovery takes as input:

A. Error message from log files and other artifacts compiled by the Serviceability Log Analysis component B. Usage based environmental parameters at the time of failure (e.g., input/output (I/O), concurrency, out of memory, disk full, hang, trap, etc.)

C. System parameters (e.g., operating system (OS) type and level, system memory allocated to application, overall system memory, etc.)

2. Rediscovery produces as output:

A. Within a percentage of confidence, rediscovery of this problem against known Problem Management Reports

(PMRs), Authorized Program Analysis Reports(APARS), tech-notes, etc.

B. Suggestion as to whether this is a new, unique problem with an option to automatically submit it in a real time to a

support organization
