The system determines the truncation characteristics of the receiving/displaying device and alters the text preview to ensure the message is congruous to the meaning of the original text.

Thoughts

News web pages need to service screens a variety of sizes (e.g., televisions, larger personal computer monitors, laptops, mobile phones, tablets, etc.). To overcome this challenge, software is used to summarize or truncate the news feed to best fit the display the viewer is currently using. A user with a mobile phone may see different summarized content than the user viewing the same page on a 27" monitor. The software makes the decision based merely on the surface area of the display and does not consider the new meaning of the truncated sentence. Particularly, the truncated sentence may not be a complete or compelling thought. Further, a reader might misinterpret or misunderstand a sentence that is awkwardly truncated.

A method is needed to ensure the truncated portion of text conveys enough of the text to deliver a complete thought.

The novel and non-obvious system and method presented herein determine truncation characteristics of the receiving/displaying device and alter the preview to ensure it represents a complete thought and is congruous to the meaning of the original text.
