Disclosed are a method and system to prevent slower drivers from impeding safe traffic flow by warning drivers in one of two conditions: travelling at a slower speed than others are, or travelling ahead of a priority vehicle returning to the station. This system can also alert drivers as the vehicle approaches an area that allows for safe "turn-off" from the road.

Slower drivers can cause accidents because aggressive drivers become impatient and pass in less than safe conditions. A system or method is needed to inform slower drivers to move out of the way to let faster drivers pass. As an extension to this problem, emergency/priority vehicles also need to return to the station to be ready to service the next emergency. A method is also needed to alert drivers moving at normal speed to yield to emergency/priority vehicles returning to the station.

The novel contribution is a method and system to prevent slower drivers from impeding safe traffic flow by warning drivers in one of two conditions: travelling at a slower speed than others are, or travelling ahead of a priority vehicle returning to the station. This system can also alert drivers as the vehicle approaches an area that allows for safe "turn-off".

As shown in Figure 1, each vehicle is equipped with a transmitter and a receiver. The slower vehicle, V1, transmits a signal directly behind it at frequency f0 to indicate its presence. Vehicles V2, V3, ….Vn are traveling in the same direction, directly behind V1 and each receives V1's query. Vehicles V2 through Vn each respond to the query at frequency f1; using the Carrier Sense Multiple Access/Collision Detection (CSMA/CD) scheme, V1 comes to know that there are (n-2+1) vehicles within close proximity. If (n-2+1) is greater than the set threshold, vehicle V1 is alerted that it is impeding traffic flow, and should move out of the main travel lanes as soon as it is safe to do so.
