Abstract

Wrap on pipe screen jacket manufactured over perforated base pipe or valve bodies causes jacket manufacturing and collapse issues due to the lack of rib wire support on the wrap id (base pipe/valve body od). The wrap cools after welding and collapses the rib at the perforation, and during screen collapse conditions in the well the unsupported rib wire is the weak point allowing pressure to deflect the jacket causing a leak path and ultimate failure due to erosion. Slots can be used to provide base pipe/valve body inlets but there are limitations to the length /qty of slots due to weakening of the base pipe in tensile/buckling, and collapse if the slots are too long. An Ultra Large Multi Zone Production Flow Gravel Pack System would include a rigid wrap on pipe screen with screen joint communication, large valve inlets or base pipe perforation and a large ID. The valve inlets or perforation could be filled with sintered beads or other (larger than screen gage) porous media that is sanded smooth on the base pipe surface before the wrap on pipe jacket is manufactured. The porous media filling the perforations or valve body inlets must not act as a filter because packing off in this area could potentially fill the screen annulus and block screen communication to the next joint. The porous media should see only particles smaller than wrap on pipe screen gage in the production flow direction and should be sized to allow those particles through. The porous sintered media would allow flow through the perforations/valve inlet and provide support to the bakerwrap rib wires during manufacturing and during operation. The porous media providing support only (no filtration) would allow large production inlets for wrap on pipe. This combined with the largest possible production string ID would provide increased production while maintaining collapse resistance ratings. Could use any porous media for this application so long as it retains porosity and can be sanded flush to base pipe od after installation, before wrap on pipe jacket is installed
