Abstract

During laparoscopic surgery, the need often arises for the insertion of additional ancillary devices to accomplish a surgical task or to intervene on an intra-operative issue. It is preferred not to access the body cavity for the insertion of these devices with another trocar puncture to minimize patient pain and maximize patient cosmetic results. Potential types of ancillary devices required during a laparoscopic surgical procedure may be: 1) For electrosurgery, a smoke evacuation and/or smoke precipitation device 2) For surgical transections, a glue or fibrin application device.

SUMMARY

During laparoscopic surgery, the need often arises for the insertion of additional ancillary devices to accomplish a surgical task or to intervene on an intra-operative issue. It is preferred not to access the body cavity for the insertion of these devices with another trocar puncture to minimize patient pain and maximize patient cosmetic results.

Potential types of ancillary devices required during a laparoscopic surgical procedure may be:


1) For electrosurgery, a smoke evacuation and/or smoke precipitation device


2) For surgical transections, a glue or fibrin application device.

DESCRIPTION

A dual lumen trocar device is proposed to facilitate these laparoscopic surgical procedure unmet needs. The dual lumen trocar device consists of a sleeve with a longitudinal working channel inclusive of sealing mechanism positioned laterally across the working channel to minimize leakage without a device inserted. This working channel is adjacent a housing that contains a stopcock mechanism for the control of CO2 or air into the body cavity through the working channel.

The additional lumen for the insertion of ancillary devices is adjacent the working channel and is positioned parallel to the working channel for its distal portion extension.
