A Method and System for Split Billing in Cloud Infrastructure as a Service Frameworks

Cloud infrastructure as a service provides facilities such as, but not limited to, dedicated server, managed hosting and cloud computing resources. In such an environment, accounting and billing uses account owners details. This means that in a shared customer account used by different service providers, invoices are charged against the brand owner or customer owner for the account. Generally, for infrastructure, security, and lower total cost of ownership (TCO), shared accounts are used, which reduces overall costs through reduction of duplicated systems such as firewalls, networks, and maintenance operations on these infrastructure systems. A service provider may have many clients using such shared resources, but may not be able to charge clients for the specific resources the respective clients use, nor add service fees for the shared resources due to lack of such options in the existing frameworks.

Disclosed is a method and system for split billing in cloud infrastructure as a service frameworks. The method and system utilizes an Application Programming Interface (API) service to re-organize each line item of each invoice generated by the specific cloud infrastructure as a service. The method and system re-organizes each line item of each invoice into separate billing statements based on system details. The details used to organize the data may be, but need not be limited to, user name or e-mail, instance ID or host name of specific systems, or other data stored in the records of cloud infrastructure as a service.

The method and system also utilizes a reference system of the cloud infrastructure as a service to organize the key details into client specific bills. The data stored in the reference system may include, but is not limited to, key assignments to project and the corresponding accounting details. For example, systems and services provisioned by/for user 1 can be cross referenced against the reference system to add required projects and the corresponding accounting details. Similarly, other systems and services provisioned by/for user2 can be added with similar projects of user 1 or with different projects and the associated accounting details. Thus, after processing all the line items of current invoices, the final client billing reports are sent to a financial administrator of the service provider and/or sent to the client directly for cost recovery.

In accordance with an implementation, the API services of cloud infrastructure as a service are utilized to download complete invoice data along with addition system det...
