Edge Methods Analyst Toolkit

Analysts acquire data, perform some sort of transformation on it, prepare it for analysis, and then conduct an analysis on the data elements in order to inform consulting recommendations. Because the analysts must often deal with large sets of unstructured, semi-structured, and structured data, manual processing is not usually possible. It takes too much time to be useful to the customers, and is costly in terms of employing researchers to manually acquire, prepare, and store the data. Specialized data tools are needed to assist analysts with these functions.

Existing tools are in the form of scripts that require a specialist to operate or require access to the developer interface. Other problems posed by this solution are version control of the tools or the tool simply not working. Alternatively, there are capable tools that have been developed that present partial solutions, but these are focused on what to do with the data after it has been acquired and conditioned. Other solutions meet some of the analysts' requirements, but are too expensive for many clients and require extensive adaptation to perform the required functions, if it can be done at all.

A solution is needed that produces the desired results, is cost-effective, and is easy to implement and use.

The novel contribution is the Edge Methods Analyst Toolkit (EMAT). The core idea is to extend an application, through its Visual Basic for Applications Integrated Development Environment (VBA IDE), to enable the required functions in a cost-effective, simple, and ubiquitous manner. Because there i...
