Abstract

An additive concentrate modifies droplet size of an aqueous agricultural composition upon spraying. The additive concentrate includes water and a cross-linked polymer formed from a polyvinyl alcohol and a borate. The additive concentrate includes a polyvinyl alcohol moiety in an amount of from 0.005 to 10 weight percent and a borate moiety in an amount of from 0.001 to 5 weight percent, based on a total weight of the additive concentrate. The cross-linked polymer is independently dispersed in the water. A method of spraying an aqueous agricultural composition through a spray nozzle onto a plant is also provided. The aqueous agricultural composition includes an active ingredient and the additive concentrate. Spraying the aqueous agricultural composition produces spray droplets having an average diameter that is larger than an average diameter of spray droplets produced from spraying a control composition that is free of the cross-linked polymer, as evaluated using ASTM E2798-11.

FIELD OF THE DISCLOSURE

     The present disclosure generally relates to an additive concentrate that modifies droplet size of an aqueous agricultural composition upon spraying. More specifically, the additive concentrate includes water and a cross-linked polymer formed from a polyvinyl alcohol and a borate.

DESCRIPTION OF THE RELATED ART

     Pesticides, when applied, are expected to be aimed at, and reach, a specific target, such as a plant. When a pesticide travels to where it is not needed or wanted, (i.e., when the pesticide "drifts"), unwanted consequences may result. Almost every pesticide, upon spray application, produces some amount of drift off the target area. Typically, drift is affected by such factors as the formulation of the pesticide, the amount of the pesticide sprayed, the application method, the weather, and whether surfactants are present in the formulation. More specifically, drift is the movement of the pesticide through the air away from the intended target. The drift can be in the form of water or liquid drops.

     Spray drift typically describes drift that occurs during or shortly after spraying of the pesticide on the target. Application is typically accomplished using ground spraying equipment

or via aerial spraying. Spray drift often occurs when wind blows the pesticide off the intended target.

     To reduce spray drift, various spray nozzles have been developed. However, the efficacy of these nozzles is, in part, dependent on applicator expertise and experience. Furthermore, the efficacy of these nozzles may also be dependent on the type of liquid being applied. For all of these reasons, there remains opportunity for improvement.

SUMMARY OF THE DISCLOSURE
