Abstract

The objective is to initiate a private chat without having to check if the recipient's screen is exposed to on-lookers. The intended system shall maintain this status so that there is no dependency on any individual to know whether the recipient is on a private screen. The mechanism to detect the existence of on lookers around a system will rely on existing visual detection techniques.

A method or System to allow Confidential Instant Messaging session ensuring Privacy

The objective is to initiate a confidential chat, through an Instant Messaging system, without having to check if the recipient's screen is exposed to on-lookers. This is to solve the problem of manual confirmation of a "Private screen" to exchange confidential business information (or any message that's intended only for the recipient).

When using an Instant Messaging (IM) system there are several instances where a user intends to initiate a confidential chat with another person and currently there no method to confirm if the intended recipient is the only one viewing the chat window. Due to this the user is forced to check with the recipient manually, if anyone is around who can read the text in his IM window.

There is a real time monitoring to ensure that there are no on lookers or passers by detected within a certain distance range that can read the content of IM window. This mechanism allows the IM application to display the privacy status of the user through an icon which would aid other to initiate a confidential/private chat session.

Additionally, this mechanism would take specific actions when passers by are detected like minimizing the chat window or blur the window.

The proposal is to work in the context of 3 actors as illustrated in Fig 1.
