Description

There is a need to capture viewable impressions of content that users have engaged with to improve accuracy and learning of personalization data models.  Currently, logging is based on batch mode that is either server-side or client-side and the initial page view logs first 20 items even if users do not scroll down to view those items and additional ones are logged 20 items per batch.  The current non-view-port based batch approach does not capture the true view information and introduces big overload/burden for the content product.

Disclosed is a method and system for providing a view-port based tracking technique that captures link views that are exposed only in a view port.  A Viewport Link is a link that is seen by a user within a browser’s viewport.  The link views are the ones that are genuinely viewed by a user using a fully automatic and consistent method.

The view-based tracking technique can be used to better measure item-level user engagement for personalization, for measuring/monitoring content performance for different content products, such as infinite content stream and digital magazine on multiple devices.  The viewport based instrumentation library is utilized by online bucket test results to improve accuracy for measuring item-level user engagement for different content products.  The view-based tracking technique can log when each item enters the view-port, and can later be used for measuring users' pre-click browsing time for each item.  Accordingly, stream can be optimized using users' scroll/browsing behaviors.

In accordance with the method and system, a new scroll handler is introduced that is separate from an additive page view scroll handler.  In an embodiment, a new global variable is utilized to capture the scrollY at the time that the last Viewability beacon was sent.  New instrumentation library initialization configuration option viewability is a used as a Boolean function with default value false.  When the option is enabled instrumentation library is notified to turn on the Viewability Scroll Hand...
